Inblog, Business Diaries

Welcome to the FOXY SOUL Business Diaries

Today’s blog post is going to be a little bit different from my usual blog post, but I hope you’ll still find it valuable. I missed last week’s Wednesday and didn’t publish the blog post about brands using humor in their strategy. I have the blog post planned and almost ready, but I didn’t want to publish it last week as there were some changes I was making with my brand. The blog post is coming this month anyway, so stay tuned if you’re interested.

Now, the changes that I’m making in my brand are quite significant, and if I’m honest, it was time for them to happen. I already made some changes at the beginning of this year, when I merged my personal blog FOXY SOUL with my freelance business and made it as my personal brand. And now, I’m pivoting once more. Or more like, continuing the pivoting that started at the beginning of this year.

OK, by now you’re probably lost and confused, so let me get straight to the point.

FOXY SOUL is a place where my personal brand resides on the internet. It changed and pivoted throughout the last two years, and it finally is at the place where I’m ready to take it to the next level. And I decided that I want to do Business Diaries segment on my blog, where I do monthly updates on how I’m growing my brand and how it is going.

Now, of course, I’ll be sharing personal development and business content like I did before, every Wednesday, but Business Diaries will be more personal and transparent. I’m not going to lie; I’m terrified and uncomfortable with this idea. It’s scary opening up like this on the internet and documenting and sharing your journey with people, but I feel like this will give you so much value.

I feel like I’ve been stagnating for the last few months. And yes, I shared my goals and how I’m moving forward, yet I’m not moving forward with my business as much as I would like. I had this feeling that something is not quite right and that I’m not doing what I want to be doing. So, I decided to make a change.

Before I get into all the details, I wanted to structure this post in the easiest way to navigate possible. So, this post is going to be divided into three parts:

#1: Introduction to my business situation and where it all started
#2: My business plans for the rest of the year and how I’m going to achieve them
#3: What can you expect from me in the upcoming months

This is only the structure for this particular blog post; each Business Diaries post will vary, a month from a month. I mentioned in my episode about goals that I’m not comfortable sharing the financial side of my business. Yet, I’ve changed my mind, and I’ll be including the income report in every Business Diaries post in the upcoming months.

Now, let’s jump in.

#1: Introduction to my business situation and where it all started

So, I think it’s appropriate to give a little bit of background about my business and how it all started. I started FOXY SOUL in February 2018 as a portfolio site for my freelance writing samples. I had some personal development content, and it was so bad, I honestly deleted it all last year.

As I was freelancing and trying to figure out my new career, I decided that I want to niche down and specialize in social media marketing only. Still, I didn’t want to do it on FOXY SOUL, so I created a new website that was called The Blonde Social, and I kept FOXY SOUL as a personal blog.

The Blonde Social was doing pretty well; I started getting more traffic, email leads, and clients, but I hated it. It never felt like my brand, so after a year or so, I deleted it and decided that I don’t want to work in social media anymore. But I still wasn’t doing anything with FOXY SOUL and only kept it as a personal blog while hoping that one day I’ll grow it into a lifestyle brand of some sort.

I was always very ambitious and had massive goals, but I never had the confidence or knowledge on how to accomplish them. That was my main struggle, and only when I started going to therapy last year, I finally had a clear path and an execution plan.

Anyway, long story short, I decided to start using FOXY SOUL as my personal and business website, a place where my personal brand lies. Now, I’m a social media marketer and have been for almost two years now, but that’s not the only thing I’m.

I wanted to combine my personality with my business, and that’s how FOXY SOUL became what it is today. I don’t want to be a fashion or beauty or lifestyle blogger, that was never my path. I’m interested in business, personal branding, and internet culture, and that’s my path.

Now, I’m giving you only a very summarised story as there has been a lot of ups and downs and fails on my part since I started working freelance, but that’s another topic on its own. Today I just wanted to quickly explain where I’m coming from and start being honest about my business and my path.

OK, so I’m currently working as a freelance social media manager for one wellness brand. At the end of last November, I started looking for a full-time marketing job. I didn’t want to freelance anymore and wanted something stable. Now, I couldn’t get a job in marketing as apparently, freelancers don’t have a high rep in the corporate world in the country that I’m living in now, so I was bumped.

After a few weeks of interviews, I applied to my current freelance job even though it was freelance, and I didn’t want it anyway and got hired. But I turned it down as I got another offer from a logistics company that wanted to hire me as a customer care specialist full time. It wasn’t a marketing job, but I figured once I’m inside, I can transfer in a few years or so.

But my anxiety had other plans for me, and after a week in that new job, I had to leave as my physical symptoms have returned. So, I decided to take the freelance social media manager job for that wellness startup, and I’ve been working with them for the last almost four months now.

Honestly, it was the best turn of events as I realized that I couldn’t work in an office setting, I need to have my own space and to work for myself is the way to go for me.

The thing that I forgot to mention is that during my freelance journey so far, I’ve moved back home from London to my mum’s house due to Brexit happening and my issues with anxiety. I realized that I don’t like living in England and that I need to regroup. I understand how lucky and privileged I’m that I have a mum who lets me sleep on her couch while I figure my shit out in life. It’s been hard and very humbling (but I can’t lie; my big ego needed it).

Anyway, when it comes to finances, I earn around $550 from my one client, and while it might not look like a lot, it’s a minimum wage where I live at the moment. I have big plans for increasing my income this year, but we’ll discuss it a little bit later in this post.

As you can see, I’m being very transparent and honest here about my living and work situations. As I’m writing it, I keep wanting just to paint my situation in a better light, but I’m resisting it. I want to be transparent with you guys.

#2: My business plans for the rest of the year and how I’m going to achieve them

So, as I’ve mentioned before already, I’m making changes around here. While my overall brand is not changing much, I want to start moving towards personal brand building and internet culture from digital marketing. This need for a change happened very naturally in the last four months when I realized that’s where I’m gravitating towards.

I’ve always been into social media, celebrities, personal branding, and pop culture, so I want to start building my brand around it. While I love digital marketing and social media in general, I feel like working with clients to build their socials is not the thing that I want to be doing for the rest of my life.

So, as you now understand the direction that I’m taking, let me explain more in-depth at what I’ll be doing.

I plan on keeping the blog pretty much the same. I’ll be publishing a new blog post every Wednesday on personal development, personal branding, business, and personal stories like I do now. I’ll be shifting the focus more on personal branding and growing a brand more instead of digital marketing, but we’ll see how it goes.

Also, I plan to increase traffic to the blog. At the moment, I’m getting roughly 100 page views a month, and my goal is to get to 1k page views. I’ll be sharing my results and how is it going every month, what’s working and what’s not. For now, my goal for the second quarter of the year is to get to 500 page views a month.

I’ve started working on my email list as well as it’s one of the most critical parts of any business. I’ve curated some lead magnets that I’ll be putting up on a blog in the upcoming weeks I just need to figure out my SSL certificate situation.

Now, I’ve been doing very well with my podcast this year, posting every Friday except the last one, and I’m in love with podcasting. I’ve struggled a lot when it comes to picking a topic or niche for my podcast, so I went with sharing my personal development journey this year.

However, I’ve decided that I’m making a change and I want to do something more fun. I’ll be leaving personal development for blog content, and my podcast will be more focused on entertaining internet culture/celebrity/personal branding stuff. I know it’s hard to understand now, but I really want just to have fun and make it as an extension to my brand, FOXY SOUL.

I’ll be uploading it on Youtube this month, I’ve already figured it out after long three months of failure, and I can’t wait for it. It’s going to be way more fun and intimate.

So, I’ll be removing my work with me page as I’ll not be taking any new social media/digital marketing, clients. I’ll be focusing on building my brand and working with the startup that I’m working with right now and re-launching Etsy shop. I would love to start offering strategy sessions, 1:1 client work, but I’ll look into it more at the end of the second quarter or third quarter of the year.

As for the re-launch of the Etsy shop, I’ll be doing that by the end of this month. It’s been a long time coming, I’ve been working on it since the beginning of this year, and I’m very excited. I had the store open last year for the majority of the year, but then as my skills improved, I wanted to do it again, but better.

So, I’ve created many fresh design products like Pinterest pin templates, Instagram story templates, and much more, and I’ll be selling them on Etsy. Also, I feel like it’s a great time to launch a store like that as everyone is on the internet, working on their side hustles and businesses during the pandemic.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ll be sharing my income reports. I won’t go into details on where and how I make or spend my money, but I’ll be discussing my progress and what I’ve been doing to increase my income.

At the moment, I’m making around $550 a month, and I only have one source of income. I’m not going to lie; it does make me feel a little bit anxious. My goal for this year was to build three stable sources of income – client work, Etsy store, and podcast sponsorships. And by the end of this year, I want to make $5k/month.

So far, everything has been moving slowly, and the whole pandemic situation and recession are making me anxious about not meeting the goals I set myself, but I try to stay positive. I’m realistic about the fact that my goals might not happen, yet I’m going to do everything in my power to make it happen or get as close to making it happen as possible this year.

#3: What can you expect from me in the upcoming months

So, if you’re interested to know what you can expect from me in the upcoming months, I wanted to be very transparent and share what type of content I’ll be creating.

As I’ll be focusing heavily on building my brand, I’ll be sharing my experiences and tips that work for me. You can expect things like email list building tips, social media tips, personal branding, and pr advice, content on getting yourself out there. Also, some book recommendations (as FOXY SOUL is not FOXY SOUL without books), personal development content, and anxiety-related topics.

As for the podcast, I’ll be doing more fun content, so if you’re into celebrity branding, influencers, and the whole internet culture and how it plays into our lives and businesses, you’ll want to tune in every Friday.

I’m planning on being more active on Instagram, and I’ll be focusing on bringing content that’s valuable and useful to you. I’ll be engaging with the community there a lot. So, if you want to chat, the best way to reach me would be on Instagram. My DM’s are always open.

I have to say; I’m very excited for the rest of the year. Yes, I have the anxiety of the uncertainty, and I definitely feel grief about the life we used to live before the pandemic happened, but I refuse to make 2020 just another horrible year. I’m petrified to publish this blog, but at the same time, I want to share my journey, and I want to share the behind the scenes in a real and raw way.

The next Business Diaries post will be coming your way at the end of next month, May, and I hope we’ll have some results to discuss and dissect and see what lessons we can take from it. Until then, don’t forget to check out my podcast and say hi on Instagram. And if you want to read more on business or foxy lifestyle, you can do it here and here.
