With the uncertainty with the world and the economy, I see more and more people starting blogs in 2020.
And most of them have aspirations to one day monetize their blogs and start making money so that they don’t have to worry about their day jobs anymore.
I think that’s great!
So, if you’ve just recently started a blog or you’re planning on starting one soon, we must talk about monetizing now if you want to make money with your blog in 2021.
But before we jump into the juicy bits, I have a warning for you:
QUIZ: What Type Of Blogger Are You? Have 60 Seconds And Want To Find Out? Take The Quiz!
Things NOT To Expect In This Blog Post:
I’ve been around the block for a few years now. I’ve seen all the possible ways people suggest making money with your blog, and let me tell you that there is so much SHIT advice out there!
These blog posts like you’re reading now are viral and very popular, and that’s why people tend to abuse them and give suggestions that are useless if you want to make money with your blog.
And I don’t want to be one of those people. I’m interested in genuinely giving you ideas that work and are legit.
So, here are a few ways you shouldn’t expect to make money with your blog:
#1: Lazy Money
It’s pretty fucking simple:
There is no such thing as a lazy or easy way to earn money, period.
So you better get your ass to work, Suzan!
No, but really:
Don’t come to this post expecting to find the recipe for making money on your couch with 10 minutes a day of work online.
Well, I’m on a couch right now and have been working from here for the last week, but I’m spending HOURS writing and editing and not spending 10 minutes a day doing stuff and getting paid!
If you want an easy way to leave your day job and become the next online millionaire, you have to know that there will be lots of work involved in making it happen.
Sorry to disappoint you, buddy!
#2: Scammy Survey Sites
This shit is a scam to make money with affiliate marketing for bloggers who recommend those goddamn survey sites.
And do you know how I know that?
Because I was one of those fools, who fell for it and registered to do surveys to make money!
Yes, I can’t believe I’m admitting it, but that’s true…
There is no such thing as making thousands of dollars a month with surveys, so please, pretty fucking please, STOP.
And if you one day find me recommending a survey site, well, know that I’ve been kidnapped, and that’s my way of saying:
HELP ME, CALL 911!
#3: Ad Networks
If you want to make money with Google ads, get the fuck outta here, NOW!
I’m not joking.
I know that bloggers make money with ads, I’ve seen many blogs were they’re very smart with their ads, but I’m just not the biggest fan.
It’s hard to make serious, consistent income, and I just can’t stand blogs where it takes me 5 minutes to turn off every ad pop-up before I can get to the content I came for…
I’m looking at you, Forbes!
Anyway, today we’re going to talk about REAL and trusted ways of making a consistent income with your blog.
That’s the only advice you’re getting from me, and ads are not on that list!
And now that we have all that out of the way, let’s jump into the REAL good stuff, shall we?
8 Ways You Can Make Money With Your Blog In 2021
#1: Go Freelance
This is the way I make money with my blog.
I genuinely started this blog to showcase my writing portfolio and, later, digital marketing knowledge to get freelance gigs.
And I personally think that freelance is a fantastic way to make money with your blog before you have an audience.
I’m going to be honest with you now, K?
Many people say that you don’t need to have exceptional skills to go freelance, but I’m going to disagree.
If you want to work for cents and have a shitty life, then, by all means, don’t bother being good at something and just take jobs that pay shit and don’t expect much from freelancers.
I see people do it and they don’t seem too sad about it, as long as it pays money, you know?
But if you really want to make money and not drive yourself mad with the amount of work you need to do, you have to have a skill that you can sell.
When I first went freelance in 2018, I knew I wanted to be a freelance writer because I have been writing since I was 12, and it was my dream to write for a living.
Well, guess what?
I was so fucking bad at it, especially as English is not my first language, and I’ve never written articles in English and because I didn’t practice.
I soon realized that I’m not going to make real money writing as I had so much to learn.
So, if you’re thinking of pursuing a freelance path as a way to monetize your blog, I urge you to prepare your craft in advance and make sure you’re damn good!
Now, of course, you don’t have to be a freelance writer.
There are many different freelancers that brands and businesses are looking for:
- Graphic Designers
- Video Editors
- Content Creators
And while you need to know one or more skills good to actually make money freelancing, it’s not hard to become profitable.
Yes, it will take time to learn the ins and outs.
Yes, it will take time to be better than the average professional in your field.
And no, it won’t happen overnight.
But it’s very possible, and you don’t even have to go to university!
Now, when it comes to finding freelance work, I won’t be going into too much detail here, or we would be here all day and night.
But generally, there are many different ways you can find freelance clients:
#1: Apply For Freelance Jobs On Job Boards Online
Now I personally had a lot of luck finding freelance clients through job boards like ProBlogger.
There are always many clients looking for freelancers, and most of the ads are for long-term work, not just one project.
There are thousands of other freelancers on those job boards, looking for the same work and applying for those jobs.
So, in this case, it can be tough to stand out and get hired by clients in the sea of other freelancers.
However, if you still want to try your luck, here are a few great online job boards for freelance writers:
#2: Create An Account On Fiverr And Other ‘Content Mills’
Most people, when they start thinking about freelance, go this route.
They create accounts for places like Fiverr and Upwork and get paid jobs there.
Now, this is one of the worst ways you can make money and start your freelance career.
Not only because those sites encourage people to make their services dirt cheap, which is not great, even if you’re new to this whole freelance thing.
But it’s also hard to find clients that want to work with you and not just get someone to do the job for the lowest price possible.
Also, standing out and getting clients is very hard on those sites as they’re packed with established freelancers.
#3: Use Cold Emailing And Approach Clients Yourself
Now, the best way to make serious money with freelancing is by getting clients yourself.
This, of course, is not an easy feast as you’ll have to prove your worth and deal with either being ignored or said ‘no’ to repeatedly.
I’m gonna be honest with you here:
I hate cold emailing.
I hate doing research, looking for potential clients, and then finding their emails.
I hate emailing, sitting for hours, personalizing each email.
And I hate not getting the response for 90 % of the time, and then if I do hear back from someone, it’s usually ‘thanks, but we’re not looking for freelancers.’
It’s a challenging and annoying process!
If you make a breakthrough and don’t give up, you’ll find some of the best-paying clients this way.
I have landed a client that paid me $200 for a 1000-word blog post through cold emailing!
You see, when you’re cold-emailing clients, you’re in a better position to negotiate your worth as a freelancer.
Now, I’m working on an extended post all about where and how to find freelance work, so stay tuned as it will be coming in a few weeks!
#2: Offer Coaching/Consulting Services
I purposely didn’t include coaching and consulting into the freelance category, as these are two very different categories.
You need to have a skill you can sell and be good at it for freelancing, but if you want to coach or consult someone, you have to be excellent at what you do.
Well, maybe not excellent, but close enough…
There are plenty of corporations and small businesses and people looking for consulting and coaching on various aspects of their lives and businesses.
Think about things you’re good at, maybe even use your day job knowledge and experience to turn it into coaching or consulting service.
You can use your blog as a way to establish your profile and presence online and have a place where people can find you.
It will also allow you to show your expertise with your blog, and it will help you rank in Google.
So, while you’re busy growing your audience for other ways to make money with your blog, you can make money consulting and coaching people!
Of course, like with freelance work, don’t expect people to come to you with the money while you don’t have the audience established.
You’ll have to do some leg work and spend time approaching potential clients and leads.
However, it’s a great way to start making money with your blog from the get-go, and it’s a consistent and legit stream of income.
#3: Become A VA
Another very popular way of making money with your blog is by offering VA services.
Here you have three different routes:
- Registering with a company to get VA clients from them.
- Advertise your services on your blog and find clients yourself.
- Look for freelance VA job positions.
Route #1: Signing Up With VA Company
There are plenty of great companies online that work with professional VA’s to match them with people looking for them.
It’s fantastic, however:
Those companies usually have high standards for their VA’s, so it might not be easy to get in so easily.
I personally had tried this route in 2018, and I didn’t get it as I didn’t have the credentials the companies were looking for.
The requirements for VA’s can be anything from:
- Having a Bachelor’s degree
- Having a PA or VA experience
- Typing and grammar tests
So you know, if you decide to go this route and become a VA with an established company, it might take some time to find the right one for you and pass all the tests and checks.
If you want to go with a company that is hiring, then here are some of the best Virtual Assistant companies I’ve found:
Route #2: Looking For VA Jobs Independently
If you don’t want to work for a company that will match you with entrepreneurs and corporations, then you can try looking for clients on your own.
This will be just like being any other freelancer, and the best sites to find Virtual Assistant Jobs would be:
Route #3: Starting Your Own VA Service Business
This is the most profitable way of being a Virtual Assistant, but it’s the one that will take the most effort and time to start making money.
You’ll need to build your blog, optimize it for SEO, and find other ways to drive traffic so that people would find you and want to hire you.
You might even have to do a bit of cold pitching as well, reaching out to online entrepreneurs and more prominent bloggers, offering them your services.
But it can be a rewarding business avenue.
Let’s take a look at some great examples of VA’s running their own businesses:
#1: Megan From Love Family Work:
You can find her service page here.
She has a fantastic service page, offering Pinterest VA services specifically, but she also has a blog and even provides her own VA courses for people interested in becoming VA’s themselves.
#2: Billie From Desire To Done
Now, she’s not the one offering her own VA services anymore, but she used to be a VA herself.
She has a service where she connects people looking for VA’s with her virtual assistants from her course (as far as I could gather from the information on her website).
You can find her service page here.
If you’re also thinking about becoming a VA, I recommend stalking her blog as she has such incredible resources on her blog!
#3: Kelly From KK VA Services
Find her service page here.
Kelly here also has a blog and offers a wide array of different services together with VA service.
This is also a great example, as you don’t have to offer only VA service or Pinterest VA services. If you have any other skills, used them to improve your value!
#4: Teach Kids
Do you have a passion for working with kids?
Some people are good at teaching and working with kids, and that’s a skill in itself.
While I will never understand why anyone would voluntarily want to spend more than 5 minutes with kids (mommy bloggers, don’t come for me!)…
But if you can stand kids for more than that and know your English well, you should teach kids English online!
There is a huge demand from non-English speaking countries for online lessons, and it can be a rewarding way to make money.
You get to choose when and how much you’re working and how much you want to earn.
And you don’t really have to have a blog or a large audience to start making money, just tolerance for kids and good English skills.
Here are some great companies to find work:
#5: Create An Online Course And Sell It To Make Money With Your Blog
Another profitable way to monetize your blog is by creating a course and selling it.
I bet you there is something that you know better than other people.
Maybe you love knitting and have been creating your own patterns and different knit designs for years for yourself.
Or maybe you’re an experienced fished, and your friends are always asking you for fishing tips.
All of us have interests in certain areas where we’re better than your average Joe.
So, why not turn that passion and knowledge in a subject into something that makes you money?
Creating a course is perfect for this.
Now, there are two different ways you can go about creating and selling your courses:
Option #1: Host Your Course On Platforms Like Udemy Or Skillshare
You’ve definitely heard about platforms like Udemy and Skillshare, right?
I bet you even took a few courses yourself!
I know I have, as those platforms have some great freaking resources and lessons on so many different subjects.
So, if you want something easy, you can use those platforms to create and sell your course.
You won’t have to worry about creating sales pages, getting the software to process sales, and driving traffic to your blog.
So easy, right!?
Yes, it makes course creation very straightforward and effortless, and you should give it a go.
Know that if you choose to sell your course on Skillshare of Udemy, you’ll not make a ton of money (unless you’re lucky or really good at it) as you don’t have control over those platforms.
Create a course on Udemy here.
Or create a course on Skillshare here.
Option #2: Host Your Course On Your Blog And Sell It Directly
Now, this is the best option for you here.
Creating your own online course and selling it from your own blog.
It’s great because you’ll have a lot of control over every detail and step involved in creating and selling an online course.
It’s going to be hard work.
You’ll have to drive enough traffic, grow your email list as well as create a sales page that sells your course to people.
You will also need software where you’ll host your course material and have your student login.
There is plenty of different software to choose from, but these are the best of the best:
#6: Self-Publish A Book And Sell It
If you think that a full-on online course is a bit too much for you or you always wanted to write and publish a book, this method will be perfect for you.
Many bloggers sell their ebooks on various topics, and there will always be people interested in this offer.
From the audience’s standpoint, an ebook is an easier sell and a more appealing offer.
It’s usually way cheaper than an online course and shorter, less intimidating, so people can really dig into the information and use it practically.
Whereas the online course is a massive commitment, time-wise and money-wise.
Now, if you’re passionate about cooking, you can quickly release your own cooking book with recipes and different kitchen tips.
You can continue creating new ebooks as you come up with new recipes, which will guarantee the income coming in.
Now that the pandemic is here and everyone is turning to cook at home more and more, food bloggers will be amongst the most popular!
No matter what your blog is about, you can find a way to write an ebook and sell it as your offer.
Of course, you’ll still need to create a good sales page and get software that allows you to process the sales and deliver the ebook to people who purchase it easily.
Now, let’s talk about a different way to publish an ebook:
Using official self-publishing companies to self-publish a book as an indie author.
I wanted to address it separately as it’s a bit more different from a process than creating your own PDF ebook and selling it on your blog.
Using Kindle KDP to publish a book will allow you to sell your book as an ebook or paperback on Amazon.
So, if you’re an aspiring author of fiction or non-fiction books, this is a great way to get yourself out there as an author.
It doesn’t cost any money to self-publish, and you’ll be getting royalties better than with traditional publishing.
And here are the best self-publishing companies to go with:
#7: Create Digital Products And Sell Them
Are you a talented illustrator, web designer, or graphic designer?
Then you should create your own digital products and sell them!
You can either set up an online shop on your blog using the WooCommerce plugin (it’s straightforward to do!)
Or, you could take your products and sell them somewhere else, like Etsy or Creative Market.
If you already have an established reader base and steady traffic to your blog, then you might be better off having your online shop on your blog.
You’ll be able to set prices for your digital products as no one can tell you what’s too expensive and what’s not.
There is no direct competition when people come to your online shop; they’re buying from you for you and not because you’re the cheapest best option.
But, there are more logistics involved. You have to have a payment system and a neatly looking shop page.
That’s why Etsy or Creative Market can be a more lucrative way to start your online shop.
You don’t have to worry about the design of your shop or how to process payments. You just have to upload your products and write product descriptions.
It’s also easier because there is already consistent traffic on those websites.
People are there browsing, looking for the things you’re selling, so you don’t have to worry about the promotion as much.
This can be a bad thing as well, as there are thousands of other artists selling their digital products.
The competition is enormous, and if someone is selling similar products to yours, but at a lower price, people might go with their product instead of yours.
It’s way harder to stand out in the sea of thousands of products, so even if there is tons of traffic on those websites, it doesn’t mean that you’ll get noticed easily.
And you have limited control when it comes to traffic, SEO optimization, and other things that might impact your shop’s success.
#8: Become An Affiliate Marketing Wizz And Make Money With Your Blog
And last but certainly not the least is using affiliate marketing.
I have to be honest with you:
When I started blogging in 2018, I didn’t believe that there is huge money to be made with affiliate marketing.
Seeing the small commissions that affiliates were making was not convincing.
And I bet you’re in the same boat as I was two years ago, right?
But listen to this:
Affiliate marketing is actually a perfect way to make money with your blog!
I know bloggers who are using affiliate marketing as the only way they monetize their blogs.
Yes, you read that right!
They’re not selling courses or digital products; they’re not running membership sites or offer services.
They simply are fucking great at affiliate marketing!
So, how do you start making money with affiliate marketing?
Well, there are two options for you here:
Option #1: Join Affiliate Programs For Other Bloggers And Online Entrepreneurs
Many bloggers who sell their own digital products have their own affiliate programs.
They usually allow you to join their affiliate programs even if you haven’t bought anything from them.
But of course, that’s a risky business, as you should never recommend something that you don’t use yourself.
And you know what the best thing is?
They usually offer a commission that’s worth up to 50% of the product
These types of commissions can allow you to make a lot of money with affiliate marketing.
And you don’t have to have millions of pageviews a month as you would with small commissions most brands offer.
I personally am in the process of registering for all the affiliate programs for products I’ve bought from other bloggers.
There are some great online courses I’ve taken that I already recommend and love so much, so why not make some money on the top?
I bet you have courses and ebooks you love, so check out if the creators offer affiliate programs on their websites.
Option #2: Join Affiliate Networks For Bloggers And Influencers
Another option would be to join affiliate networks for bloggers and influencers.
There are tons of great companies working with those affiliate networks, so it’s definitely worth joining a few.
Here are some of the best:
Joining these companies is pretty straightforward:
You fill out their application and wait for your account to be approved.
And once it is, you log into your account, and there you can usually find a huge list of companies that work with that network, and you get the code.
With some brands, you might need to apply to get the affiliate code for their products even after you’ve joined the network.
The rules vary, so make sure to check individually when joining the network!
And here you have it – 8 fantastic ways to make money with your blog in 2021!
Uh, if you’ve made it this far, congrats!
As you can see, there are ways to make money blogging, and you can still do it if you’ve been thinking about it for years.
And, now that you have the tools, it’s time to get to work!
